When moving with your faithful companion, they will lose the familiar landmarks they were used to in your home. Some pets may struggle with this transition and can even become ill if you don’t take a few precautions.
Prepare them gently for this change:
- Keep your pet away from the hustle and bustle of packing. Don’t involve them in the stress of packing and organizing.
- Leave their litter box and food bowl in place until the last moment.
- Maintain regular walk and feeding times, as if nothing has changed.
- If the new home isn’t too far, take them for walks in the new neighborhood beforehand.
Create new landmarks for them:
- During the move, transport your pet in the carrier they are used to and include their favorite toys.
- Upon arrival, place familiar items in the new home: toys, bones, treats.
- Keep them isolated while furniture is being set up to avoid additional stress.
- Allow them to roam freely once the setup is complete so they can explore their new environment.
- Don’t punish them if they behave awkwardly… they are probably just marking their territory.
In this way, your new home will quickly become theirs as well!
