No matter why you’re moving abroad (work, studies, retirement…), the logistics will depend largely on the distance. While moving to a neighboring country differs from moving to another continent, there are still many common steps.
BE ORGANIZED!
Don’t wait until the last minute to figure out what’s ahead for your move! Plan 3 to 6 months in advance to be ready for the big day!
- Give notice to your landlord if you’re renting. Do it at least 3 months before your departure and send a registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt.
- Obtain a visa if needed, or register as a resident in the destination country.
- Book your international move with SPIROUX.
- Notify the tax authorities before leaving and terminate all Belgian contracts (insurance, phone, electricity, etc.), then subscribe to new ones in your destination country. Note: to open a bank account, you must first have an official address in the new country.
- Subscribe to social insurance or request a European Health Insurance Card.
- Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration plates.
- Take out an expatriate insurance policy to fully cover your healthcare costs (you usually must reside at least 6 months in the country to subscribe).
- Once arrived, register with the embassy to more easily obtain copies of official documents you’ll need for work, school, etc.
